GAME SELECTION
Texas Hold'em
Texas Hold'em is the most popular form of poker played in poker rooms today, both land-based and online. As the chosen game of the World Series of Poker Finals, it is the game by which ultimate poker skill is measured.
Texas Hold'em is a fast-paced, exciting type of poker, with lots of betting action. Each player is dealt 2 cards, and then 5 communal cards are dealt to the board, over the course of 3 betting rounds. This means that all the players at the table can see 5 out of the 7 possible cards that everyone will use to build their strongest hand for the showdown. Contrast this with 7-Card Stud where each person only has two cards visible, and 5 cards cannot be seen by the other players. The upshot is that it is easier to predict what hands your opponents could be holding. Which, on the one hand, is an advantage, but also means that it can be harder to bluff. This makes for a fast, aggressive game in which you'll need to know your stuff to survive.
Omaha
Omaha Hi is played in a similar way to Texas Hold'em, except that nine cards are used, creating a wider range of possible combinations. This makes for a more intricate game where you have to really be on your toes. The rules themselves are also related to Texas Hold'em, except for the fact that Omaha deals four pocket cards (rather than two), and the showdown only uses two pocket cards and three communal cards (rather then a choice of any combinations of communal and pocket cards).
7-Card Stud
Seven-Card Stud is one of the most popular forms of Poker throughout the world, but requires patience and skill. You especially need to know when to hold and when to fold, because with the number of cards and betting rounds it can get expensive to stay in the pot - and even more so if you aren't holding a good enough hand at the showdown. 7-Card Stud pots can get quite large, as the maximum bets double after the third round of betting.
The game also requires that you make adjustments to your strategy based on the size of the pot and the other players. A further facet of the game that needs to be mastered if you want to be a winning player, is remembering which cards appeared in hands that have already been folded, which obviously affects the odds of you getting the cards you need to complete your hand.
It is, however, one of the easiest poker games to learn, and is as popular in home games as in professional poker rooms.
5-Card Stud
Five-Card Stud is much the same as Seven-Card Stud, except that each player receives 5 cards, only one of which is dealt face-down. It is an easy game to learn, but requires skill and awareness to play well. The number of visible cards that each player displays makes it easier to judge the relative and potential strength of your hand. Like 7-Card Stud it pays to remember the cards that other players were displaying before they folded, so as to better be able to estimate the chances of the card you need being dealt in the later rounds.
There are four rounds of betting, one after each card is dealt, so fairly large pots can accumulate. As with most forms of poker, patience is the key.
